N2 Applied aims to transform our food production systems by enabling a circular economy on farms. Our technology enables farmers to recycle nutrients to economically produce their own fertiliser and to do so while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing resource efficiency. Millions of tons of ammonia are lost from livestock farms every year. Lost ammonia means lost nutrients needed for growing crops and feeding the planet. Ammonia losses to the environment at this scale is not sustainable. The extensive use of fossil fuel-based nitrogen fertiliser is a key hurdle to sustainable agricultural practices. Industrial fertilisers manufactured using Haber-Bosch, currently feeds half the world’s population. At the same time its manufacture alone counts for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and more in its application. We take on Haber-Bosch! N2 Applied is developing plasma technologies that fix reactive nitrogen from the atmosphere and react these with the ammonia in manure or other organic material. The reaction stops ammonia losses, increases the nitrogen content and provides a fertiliser with the essential nutrients to grow crops.
