Living with the risk of bird flu

Bird Flu, or Avian Influenza (AI), continues to pose a significant threat to bird health and welfare and sustainable poultry production in the UK and globally. The UK poultry industry is worth c£3.6 billion at the farm gate level. Total consumption of poultry meat is close to the total for beef, lamb and pork combined.

CIEL-Investing-in-Animal-Health-Report-July-2023-1

Investing in animal health

CIEL-Net-Zero-Carbon-UK-Livestock-FINAL-interactive-revised-May-2021-1

Net zero carbon & uk livestock

CIEL has a goal to ensure future research supports the sector’s ambition to deliver net zero carbon. However, achieving this requires a strong consensus on where the industry is currently and a clear understanding of the areas which can contribute the most towards achieving this ambition.

CIEL-Protein-Quality-Report-1

Why protein quality matters in livestock production

In recent years CIEL has produced several reports related to Net Zero and Livestock which are available here. A common theme has been the value livestock add to our food system by supplying higher quality protein than other food sources. This report focuses on protein quality because it is fundamentally important to the use of feed resources for efficient livestock production as well as to human nutrition.

Net-Zero-Livestock-Bridging-the-gap-July-2023-1

Net zero & livestock: bridging the gap

In recent years, CIEL has produced two key reports relating to achieving net zero ambitions for the UK livestock sector. A sobering conclusion from the expert authors of these reports was that for the ambitious goal of a 64% reduction in carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, current technology and practices could only deliver a 24% reduction* at high rates of uptake. The remaining ‘emissions reduction gap’, requires new innovations in technology, services and management approaches.

Net-Zero-Livestock-DOC-13th-may-interactive-LOW-RES-(2)-1

How farmers can reduce emissions

Delivering our UK ambition for net zero carbon by 2050 continues to be a major focus for all sectors of the economy and society. An output from COP26 was the commitment to sciencebased plans focused on recognised methodology, with regular reporting of progress against agreed targets. The need for rapid and coordinated action was the clear and consistent message.

Why-nitrogen-matters-in-livestock-production-REPORT-1

Why nitrogen matters in livestock production

CIEL recognises that a key part of its mission to facilitate the delivery of sustainable and circular food systems is to emphasise the critical value of nitrogen (N) in livestock production. By exploring how N cycles through the system, interacting with the atmosphere, soil, water, plants, animals and microbes, CIEL seeks to highlight the balance of N in livestock production and empower informed decision making to reduce N losses.
