James Hutton Institute 400x300

The James Hutton Institute

The James Hutton Institute is a world-leading independent scientific research organisation based in Scotland but working in collaboration across the globe. Our pioneering science innovates and finds solutions for the challenges posed by the climate and nature crises on the sustainability and resilience of our crops, land, natural resources and communities through the development of transformative tools, interventions, products and land management practices. Our research is unique in that it is tested in labs and also at landscape scale on our farms, combines the natural and socio-economic sciences and considers the connections between crops, resources and people. We find scientific solutions to the challenges posed by the climate and nature crises on the sustainable management of land, crop and natural resources that support thriving communities. Our researchers explore the intricate relationships between land, water, and communities to promote sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet. From improving agricultural productivity and food security to mitigating the impacts of climate change. Our work is rooted in the belief that science can drive positive change. Our cutting-edge science facilities, including state-of-the-art laboratories and field stations, allow us to conduct experiments and gather data that inform policy decisions, shape future innovations and drive sustainable economic growth. Collaboration is key to our approach. We work closely with partners in academia, industry, government, and local communities to ensure that our findings are both relevant and actionable. Our innovation centres stand as beacons of hope in addressing pressing global challenges. These include the Advanced Plant Growth Centre and the International Barley Hub. In addition, the Hutton also co-leads major relevant centres including the Land Use for Net Zero (LUNZ) Hub and the National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC).
