What is the UK Dairy Carbon Network?

The UK Dairy Carbon Network is an innovative project bringing together dairy farms, supply chains, policy makers and scientists from across the UK to explore and implement practical solutions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

A network of over 50 dairy farms will select and implement ways to
reduce GHG emissions on their farms. GHG reduction strategies are within the four key areas of:

  • Breeding
  • Nutrition
  • Animal Health
  • Nutrient Management

Working in partnership with farmers, scientists and farm liaison teams, the dairy farms will measure the impact of the chosen practices and technologies.

The UK Dairy Carbon Network is led by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Northern Ireland and delivered through a UK-wide consortium of trusted partners. The project brings together the UK’s farmer levy organisations AHDB and AgriSearch alongside eight leading dairy research institutions.

These research partners bring internationally recognised expertise in greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement and mitigation, as well as in improving nitrogen use efficiency and phosphorus utilisation in UK dairy systems. Crucially, they also have proven experience in delivering large-scale, on-farm research across diverse farming systems and geographies.
