Earth Rover: From prototype to commercial growth

Earth Rover transformed CLAWS from a promising prototype into a commercial autonomous weeding platform, securing £2.8 million in investment, winning its first customers and building a pipeline for growth.

With support from the UK Agri-Tech Centre, the business is now preparing to scale production and expand into new markets.

Impact at a glance…

  • Technology readiness: TRL 6 (prototype demonstrated) to TRL 8 (technology finished, tested and qualified), with TRL 9 (proven in real-world operation) expected in 2026
  • Investment secured: £2.8 million in 2025
  • Commercial sales: Eight CLAWS units sold, with ten more due for delivery in early 2026

The challenge

Earth Rover was founded in 2017 to develop autonomous technology that helps growers manage weeds without herbicides while collecting valuable crop data.

“The technology showed strong potential but we needed additional resources to take it to the stage,” explained James Miller, CEO of Earth Rover. “Taking the early-stage prototype to commercial product required specialist facilities, technical support and opportunities to validate the system under real farming conditions. We also needed to attract investment, build industry contacts and demonstrate a clear commercial case for growers.”

The support

Working with the UK Agri-Tech Centre gave Earth Rover access to the practical support they needed to accelerate development of CLAWS.

Specialist hub facilities – including dedicated workshop space, an LED calibration room and shared tooling – enabled the team to build, refine and test successive CLAWS prototypes.  This allowed the business to focus more of its resources on product development rather than the cost and complexity of establishing these capabilities in-house.

The Centre also supported the company’s wider commercial ambitions through Innovate UK bid and project support; introductions to suppliers, distributors and technology partners; and access to a professional environment for customer and investor meetings.

Through these connections, Earth Rover was able to strengthen its supply chain, build industry credibility and secure the investment needed to move the business forward.

“UK Agri-Tech Centre opened doors to partners we’d have struggled to reach on our own, and having access to specialist facilities meant we could focus our investment where it mattered most – improving the product and preparing it for market,” he stressed.

What changed?

With the right facilities and support in place, the CLAWS platform progressed from TRL 6 to TRL 8, moving from a validated prototype towards commercial deployment.

This progress translated into measurable growth:

  • secured £2.8 million in private investment across two funding rounds
  • sold its first eight commercial CLAWS systems
  • built a sales pipeline of approximately 200 units by 2028
  • established new partnerships with distributors and technology suppliers
  • developed export opportunities across the Netherlands, Spain and France, with ambitions to expand into the rest of Europe, as well as North America and Australasia.

“The support provided by UK AgriTech Centre helped us move faster, demonstrate the technology at commercial scale and build confidence with both investors and customers,” James added. “Those early milestones have created momentum for the next stage of growth.”

Business and industry impact

Reaching commercial readiness has transformed Earth Rover from an early-stage technology developer into a business preparing for international growth.

Investment secured through this period is enabling the company to scale production, move into larger premises and expand its workforce. New distribution partnerships are opening overseas markets, while early commercial sales are providing valuable customer feedback to support further product development.

Now available commercially, CLAWS is able to provide growers with chemical-free weed control and better intelligence across a wide range of fresh produce crops – resulting in lower labour costs and improved soil health. Remarkably, many users have reported a return on their investment within 1-2 seasons.

Earth Rover’s progress also demonstrates how supporting innovative SMEs can accelerate the commercialisation of new agricultural technologies. Bringing solutions like CLAWS to market not only advances technology that reduces reliance on chemical herbicides – it creates a ripple effect of opportunity through supply chain spillover, expands data integration and strengthens the UK’s position as a leader in agri-tech innovation.

What’s next?

Having demonstrated the commercial potential of CLAWS, Earth Rover is now focused on scaling the business, including reaching TRL 9 and increasing production capacity to meet growing demand. This will include expanding into larger premises, growing the team from 19 to around 40 employees and broadening the technology to support additional crops like sugar beet, leafy greens and propagation systems.

International growth is also a priority, with plans to build on existing opportunities in Europe and expand into North America and Australasia, where growers face many of the same labour and sustainability challenges.

As the business continues to grow, Earth Rover will continue to work with the UK Agri-Tech Centre on further testing and industry engagement, helping bring autonomous, chemical-free weeding technology to more growers across the globe.
